Today’s most popular religion is the Latter Day Saint movement or more commonly called as Mormon. Mormon Church Genealogy is also the biggest database of privately held genealogy information. Not many people know the genealogy of the Mormon Church, is considered to be adherents to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The term “Mormon” comes from the Book of Mormon, a book of religious text a man named Joseph Smith, Jr. translated. The book contains the history of early inhabitants of the Americas, was written and compiled by a prophet they call Mormon. This is the start of Mormon Church Genealogy.

Considering the Mormons are neither Protestants nor members of this sect of religion, they do not consider themselves as a part of Christianity, but consider themselves as Christians who believe in Jesus Christ and what he stood for.

Mormon history is not a pleasant one, they have struggled and faced prosecution from other religions and other areas of Christianity. According to the Book of Mormon, the prophet Mormon lived in the Americas during the 4th century and was called by God to compile records about his people and put it in a single book. Another chapter in the Mormon Church Genealogy.

After Mormon’s death, his son, Moroni witnessed the persecution and destruction of his people. He is the person who buried the original Book of Mormon on a hill called Comorah, which they now call upstate New York.

1400 years later, Moroni was said to have been sent as a messenger by God, to a man, Joseph Smith, Jr. Smith was sent to the book’s burial place and instructed to translate it to English. Smith, it is said, didn’t know the language the book was written in and completely and accurately translated the Book of Mormon. These “miracles” have made Smith a prophet of God.

The struggle of the Mormon people didn’t stop there, Smith was murdered in 1844 by a mob in Carthage, Illinois, in a jail. After that, most of the followers of Latter-day Saints started to follow Brigham Young, who became president of his denomination. He then proceeded to an Exodus to Salt Lake City, Utah, which is the largest population of Mormons  in the world. Others claiming the Church presidency, led followers to other locations in the United States, and some stayed behind in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Up until now, the term “Mormon” is used to describe the Brigham Young group in Salt Lake City, Utah, but other smaller groups adopting the Latter Day Saints have made efforts rejecting the use of the term “Mormon” to describe their group. They claim it makes no reference to Jesus which the Church of Mormon and Latter Day Saints Church is their central figure.

Mormon’s are very different in terms of theology, practice and culture among other religions, such as Mennonites, Religious Society of Friends, Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Amish.

Mormon Church Genealogy goes very far back in time and is quite possibly the oldest database of family names and family history in the world. This is a great starting place for family search genealogy.
